Shrewsbury Flower Show includes a Spitfire and Mustang flypast, but what were their contributions to WW2?
The Spitfire designed by R.J. Mitchell was our most effective fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Although in terms of numbers of aircraft in service and numbers of victories it was outshone by the Hurricane. Through a process of continual development the Spitfire was able to remain in frontline sevice throughout the war.





The Mustang (once united with a licence built version of the Merlin engine) was the first high performance fighter with a long enough range to be able to protect the American 8th Air Force bomber fleets on their daylight raids on Germany. The air cover provided by the Mustang, Thuderbolt and Lightning fighters helped keep the bomber losses on these raids to a sustainable level, thus allowing the German arms factories to be bombed frequently and acurately.





Therefore the Spitfire helped to prevent the Germans gaining the air superiority that they would need in order to consider invading Britain. Whilst the Mustang ensured the air superiority required in order to destroy the German war machine.

The P-51 Mustang, originally designed by North American Aviation for the British RAF, proved itself in combat when it was reconfigured with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The upgraded configuration allowed for greater speed and a higher ceiling making it eligible for more combat roles.





In 1943, the P-51B entered combat over Europe escorting B-17 and B-24 bombers. The Mustang proved impressive in their combat role as an escort fighter, dominating German interceptors on many runs. Eventually the P-51 Mustang served in most combat theaters becoming a big factor in the dominance of the skies.





Through all of World War II and several years afterward, the Spitfire proved itself in combat as well as endearing itself to every man, woman and child who ever laid eyes on it. Not suprisingly, when the Spitfire was phased out of military service it became the prized possession for pilots around the globe. Air Marshals, test pilots, captains of industry, movie stars, and aircraft enthusiasts of all ages have fallen hopelessly under its spell for sixty-five years. More than any other aircraft in existence, the sight or sound of a Spitfire will stop any pilot in their tracks, their eyes thrust into the sky to see its shape, their ears yearning to feel the thunder of twelve cylinders at full song, their spirits transported back to the skies over Europe when the fate of the world hung in the balance.
Reply:The Spitfire was Britains main plane and its various versions were very successful in repelling the nazis in ww2..The mustang although it was developed later into ww2 played a significant part as a bomber escort plane for the americans..

Daily air duels of fighters vs. German bomber groups took place over most of the U.K. - if not for the superior speed and maneuverability of these aircraft, Germany would of achieved air superiority and possibly invaded England before the USA and allies could mount the D-Day invasion of France.

Britain' where everybody (not actively fighting the war) and, had access to a plot of land, cultivated fruit/vegetable crops during WW2?





Both aircraft made major contributions to winning WW2.

Reply:Well to put it very simply.. They were significant for europe..


The Spitfire along with the Hurricane, which in fact was more numerous, helped secure our Airspace and so stopped the Invasion.


The Mustang enabled the Bombers to range deep into Germany with fighter protection which they had been unable to do prior to its arrival in Europe ...
