Which flower is the symbol of luck?

The four-leaf clover is a symbol of luck, %26amp; so is the Lucky Bamboo.

Different numbers of stalks of the Lucky Bamboo are thought to symbolize slightly different kinds of luck:

2 stalks = love

3 or 6 stalks = happiness

5 or 7 stalks = health

8 stalks = wealth

9 stalks = general good fortune

21 stalks = blessings

Apple Blossom signifies better things to come.

Lily of the Valley has come to symbolize the return of happiness.

What flower's should I give her ?

I have a crush on this girl, and I want to suprise her with roses. From my understanding, different color roses, means different things. What color means that i'm interested in you. I know red means I love you. But i'm not in love yet lol. Please advise !

I would give something more unique than roses. How about some sort of lily? Like a Stargazer? Then she will feel special because you took the time to think outside the box.

My Flower horn laid eggs what should i do? what should i feed if the eggs hatched?

Well you have two choices of doing with eggs. One is to artificially take care of it. This means that you will have the responsibility to keep the eggs clean and prevent fungus spread of all the eggs. The other choice is to let the parents take care of it. But most of the time (especially with inexperience parents) the parents would eat the eggs. I don't have an explanation of why this happens, but it is common.

When the eggs hatch, you don't need to feed it yet. It still has their yolks so thats their source of nutrients. After 3-5 days though, they would become free swimming and their yolks would be used up. Thats the time you start feeding them with finely crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.
My Flower horn laid eggs what should i do? what should i feed if the eggs hatched?
take out the female, the male will takecare the fry, when the fry can swim u feed them artemia(use 24 hour hatch the artemia).or ask the information from nearest fish shop.
Reply:perhaps this will help. congrats.

http://www.flowerhornxport.com/qa.htm
Reply:Were the eggs fertilized (is there a male in the tank?) If so, make sure the temperature is set to 80 - 82 degrees. Flowerhorn cichlids are usually very good parents once you gotten you Flowerhorn fish to breed. They guard their egg and fry fiercely. The fry is relatively large and will accept newly hatched brine shrimp once they are born. After a week or two you can start to feed the fry crushed flake food and pellets.

The potential problems that can surround Flowerhorn breeding is not over just because the fish spawned and the eggs have hatched. You will still have to keep a close eye on the fish since the male sometimes becomes aggressive towards the female and guards the fry from the female. The female must in such situations be removed or she will most likely be killed.affiliate

Which flower is the symbol of love in turkey?

According to Mary Wortley Montagu, who introduced the meaning of flowers to the western world in the writting of Book Le Langage des Fleurs, after spending time in Turkey gave many uses of giving flowers to convey the message of love. These ranged from infatuation to lust. A brief listing of these can be found at http://garden.firelady40.com/meanings.ht...

In regards to your question, it would depend upon where you are in your relationship. If declaring your love for the first time - a red tulip. If finally confessing of your love (why did you hold it back?) - a moss rosebud. Or if you have been in a realationship for a while a forget-me-not would say "true love."performing arts

I've been going insane trying to remember the name of this movie. I saw it years ago when vh1 started the 'movies that rock' thing. Which flower's name comes from the Turkish word for TURBAN because of its shape?

Tulip

The European name for the flower comes from the Persian word for turban, a origin probably originating in the common Turkish custom of wearing flowers in the folds of the turban.
Which flower's name comes from the Turkish word for TURBAN because of its shape?
tulip
Reply:It is not turban. Actually it is TULBENT (Tülbent) cheesecloth/gauze. The story is :

Once upon a time a foreigner in istanbul was wandering and saw some LALE(tulips) and asked a man showing the flowers. But the guy was working on the flowers but could not understand what the foreigner was asking. He thought the foreigner was asking the cloth which the worker was wearing on his head. The answer was "oh TULBENT TULBENT!" . Time by time, long ways, voyages...the word reached to other lands and accepted as TULIP. Also there is another story that tells us the people couldn't understand tulip onions and they tried to eat them after their ships landed....skin disease

PLANTER/FLOWER URNS???? Cheap - Please HELP!?

Hi! I'm looking for someplace to get relatively cheap planter urns to serve as my vase for my reception centerpiece. The wedding is already over budget, so please - if you know someone or someplace that sell this urns for cheap - let me know.

ps. my wedding theme is tuscan, so i think these would be an ideal centerpiece. Would also appreciate of other suggestions on other cheap centerpieces.

THANKS A LOT!!!
PLANTER/FLOWER URNS???? Cheap - Please HELP!?
....take any ol' thing you find that you like at a second hand shop, that's within budget, and paint it an adobe-taupe, flat (latex) color (carefully blow dry the wet paint to "cure" it to difficult surfaces, if you're short on time). In the end, even if a little of the old gold or red shows through, it will look like it costs a thousand million bucks. Then you can add your classic floral touches!! Good luck, doll!
Reply:I suggest visiting wedding directory such as http://www.weddinglenox.com

Unlike most yellow pages, they have price comparison for the vendors (DJ,videographer, florist, and photographer) you can choose.

You can also try their matching system http://www.weddinglenox.com/f-membersign... that will match you up with local vendors. I tried it and have good result as I only recieved responses from vendors according to my request.

One problem I had with my wedding is that it is hard to locate vendors in most website as most likely they group by states and there are too many of them that's too far from me and I have to look at each site to figure out.

The sites I provide above have a easy to use layout to show you pictures, pricing and location in one page plus, you can send out your inquiry for matching vendor to contact you. That save me lots of time to locate the best vendors with the right price.
Reply:Old time pottery, Hobby lobby, both have sales on ceramics and you can pick them up for a few dollars each.

Ebay has some great deals you can get 12 table top lanterns or urns for about 70 bucks.

But if waaayyyyyyy over budget, try the platic ones at dollar tree or walmart and get some of the 48 cent acrylic paint in terracata and umber and gold, and sponge your own for pennies. gold and umber and rich green sheer fabric wrapped around a simple glass bowl with candles floating is another idea.

99 cent gold dinner plate chargers with candles and glass beads in appropriate colors, another option.

Global flower trade information?

There is not really a "global" flower trade. It is illegal to import/export many plants and flowers because of agricultural restrictions. Flowers are grown and sold locally or between nearby states. Here is some information on the U.S. flower market:

According to the U.S. Census Bureau 4,598 establishments composed this industry in 2001, with an annual payroll of $1.6 million. In 2002, total annual sales were $14.3 billion. The majority were small-scale, single-unit operations, which operated year-round. The industry employed some 60,890 people and had an annual payroll of $1.6 million. In 2003, the number of establishments climbed to 9,123, with annual sales of $8.9 billion. The total number of employees increased also to 86,292. The average sales per establishment totaled about $1 million.

Bedding and garden plants and flowers make up approximately 66 percent of annual floriculture sales in the Midwest. The Northeast accounts for 55 percent, the South was responsible for 43 percent, while the West represents 36 percent. In a report released by the Floriculture and Nursery Crop Outlook, the total sales for floriculture crops in 2003 was valued at $5 billion; nursery crops generated $9.4 billion; and floriculture and nursery were valued at $14.4 billion.

The industry is divided into two general categories: Wholesalers primarily engaged in the distribution of flowers and florists' supplies, and wholesalers engaged in the distribution of nursery stock. Flowers and florist supplies contributed about 28 percent of its sales, and nursery stock generated about 26 percent of its sales. Combined they generated approximately $3.8 billion.

The majority of companies in this classification were small--employing fewer than five persons. In 2001, 1,617 companies had fewer than 5 employees; 797 had between five and nine employees; 652 had between 10 and 19; 676 had between 20 and 99; 324 had between 100 and 499; and 64 had 500 or more employees.

Like other industries of its kind, the wholesale flowers, nursery stock, and florists' supplies industry experienced a decline in the number of establishments and with only modest increases in sales, rising an average of five percent a year throughout the early 1990s to an estimated $2.3 billion by 1996. The 1994 U.S. Industrial Outlook attributed the decline to mergers, acquisitions, and business failures. In addition, the increase of direct manufacturer to retail agreements and the use of mail order and catalog sales negatively impacted the wholesale industry.

The largest group, comprised of 4,300 units, reported sales between $100,000 and $249,000 in 1997, according to Dun's Census of American Business. The next biggest category included slightly larger operations with gross revenues between $250,000 and $499,000 that year: 1,754 wholesalers fell into this group. More than 1,500 units had sales between $500,000 and $1 million, and about 1,700 units had sales between $1 million and $5 million. 1,202 wholesale flower and nursery stock distributors had annual sales volumes between $50,000 and $99,000; and only 366 sold between $1,000 and $50,000 worth of stock in 1997. The smallest grouping, comprised of units reporting more than $5 million in annual sales, remained relatively steady, increasing from 347 to 349 operators.

The leading states with the highest value of wholesale floriculture sales were California with 19.7 percent, Florida with 18 percent, Michigan with 6.4 percent, Texas with 5.6 percent, and Ohio with 3.9 percent. Combined, these states accounted for $4.6 billion in sales.

In a report released from The United States Department of Agriculture, floriculture was expected to climb up 2 percent in 2003. This was in anticipation of the improvement of the overall economy that had been flat, and rising retail sales. The report further concluded that some 4,600 growers had sales of $100,000 or more. These individual growers represented 94 percent of the total wholesale value of production. California accounted for about 20 percent of the total crop. Michigan, Texas, and New York shared 17 percent of the value.

Leading companies in this industry include Florimex Worldwide, Inc.; Celebrity, Inc. of Tyler, Texas; Ball Horticultural Co. of West Chicago, Illinois; Hines Horticulture, Inc. of Irvine, California; and Shermin Nurseries of Danbury, Connecticut."visual arts

What flower pots have good drainage for cactus?

I have found that you don't need a special pot for cactus. I have sand in to bottom of my pots and then I mix sand with the soil. You want the soil you put them in to be as close to a desert as possible the will grow very well. I don't water mine that often either, they seem to prefer being neglected. I have even put catus in buckets and they do very well.

Silk or Freeze Dried Rose Petals for the Flower Girl to toss?

I hate real flowers..so that's out of the question..Please recommend sites to purchase them also..
Silk or Freeze Dried Rose Petals for the Flower Girl to toss?
You'll want to use silk. Once you step on the freeze dried they crumble in to many tiny pieces and if you have a train of any kind on your gown they will become stuck in it. Also sometimes there are still color pigments that can be released when crushed - also getting in to and staining your gown.

Silk petals can be bought at many craft or wedding supply type stores. Try http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displ...
Reply:Especially if it is going to be inside a building, even moreso if they have carpet, use silk, freeze dried and fresh have been known to leave dye/color on the carpet you will spend hours scrubbing out so the church/building doesnt freak.

If it is outside, use freeze dried so they will dispose of themselves within nature.
Reply:silk
Reply:Silk. they'll maintain their shape and of course you can get them in any color.
Reply:any craft stores has many choices of silk petals to toss. It does not really matter. You know flower girls, they may toss just a few, none at all or dump the entire basket at once. Many a flower girls has left the guests with a chuckle or 2..Have fun enjoy your day
Reply:silk....b/c it's more real like w/out being real and it floats to the ground
Reply:sick people hate real flowers
Reply:Freeze or latex.

Silk roses can look amazing but once you take them apart the single artificial petals always look fake in pics for some reason no matter how good they are.

Perhaps use an alternative to petals since you don't like real flowers....lavendar, leaves, artifical snow, something like that.
Reply:Silk is better - less likely to stain or damage anything. Check out ebay - they have a lot of really hard to find colors at cheap prices.
Reply:Make sure you are allowed to drop petals. Many places don't allow it anymore because of the mess. Michaels sells silk rose petals in all colors and they are very pretty. The have the color and an iridiscent one in the package.
Reply:I've never heard of any one who actually hates flowers. I'm hoping you have allergies and not just a black heart.

In case you still care, freeze dried rose petals don't pollute as much as silk flowers in their creation. I feel I must warn you, however, they are from real flowers. If its any consolation, they're dead.
Reply:freeze dried rose petals might create a mess, they are very fragile. silk would be an easy clean up and i believe they sell some at Joanns or Micheals.
Reply:If you have an outdoor wedding, many places won't allow silk. I used freeze dried outside, and they didn't crumble into tiny pieces either. You just leave them in the bathroom when you shower and they soften up before you use them. I just googled freeze dried petals and came up with tons of sites.

Are flower horns hard to care for and wat size tank do they neeedd?

they arent that hard...

The main issue is thetank size and the philosophy that they should be raised seperate.

No convicts or JDs ocars.... etc..

They should be in a 75, you can divide the tank and raise two. make sure the filteration is good.

other than that there isnt anything hard about them. They will get large and aggressie which is why they shoud be kept away from other fishes.

Passion Flower: I have one growing in a pot....next spring will it grow again from the root or do I need to?
If you are in a northern growing zone, you will have to bring your passion vine inside for the winter. Leave it in the pot. Give it sun but avoid placing it directly in a window with southern exposure. Treat it as a houseplant for the winter.

What should i put in the vase of flower?

to let them stay fresh for a long period of time?

i love flowers but they will not stay fresh in my house more than 2 days and i know that in the floweriest store they last for over two weeks
What should i put in the vase of flower?
Some books advise adding a ground up aspirin tablet to warm water (to eliminate bacteria), or a half teaspoon of sugar plus the ground up aspirin.

I've tried both methods, and the sugar + aspirin work very well. However, it all depends on how you prepare the flowers before you put them in the water. Cut the stems about 1" from the end to expose fresh absorbing surface. Roses must be cut underwater so air doesn't get into the stems. Keep the vase in a cool location if possible. Heat and sunlight reduce the life of cut flowers dramatically.

A lot depends on the kind of flowers and how long they were at the florists before you bought them. I've had Sam's Club/Costco roses last two weeks, astromelia, cut chrysanthemums, and fresh flowers from the farmer's market for a month. Some kinds of flowers won't last a week, no matter what you do.
Reply:I believe you supposed to re-cut the stems like 1 inch then put in the vase with a certain temp. water, not to cold, not to hot.

I heard baby aspirin crushed up in the water might help.

Then I heard of these packets the florist sells that you add into te water. Ask about that.

Has anyone ever used one of those "Instant flower garden" rolls?

They have some on QVC for a good price. I would like to get a roll to put out in front of my house but I want to know if anyone has ever used them and were they successful? I am terrible at planting flowers so I thought this would be a good thing for me to get. Do they work? Please, if you have used these, let me know how you liked them. Thank you!!
Has anyone ever used one of those "Instant flower garden" rolls?
I've done two (at different points in my life). They are almost worthless. Very few seeds germinated, and the ones that did germinate did not last long as they were not for my zone.

Also, there is very little time saved: you still have to prepare the bed.

You are better off to prepare the bed, then choose the EXACT plants you want (rather than rely on what some manufacturer predetermined would be nice in a roll).

Shrewsbury Flower Show includes a Spitfire and Mustang flypast, but what were their contributions to WW2?

Yahoo! Answers staff note: This is an official Yahoo! Answers Brain Bus question. Look here for more details: http://uk.blog.360.yahoo.com/y_answrs_te...
Shrewsbury Flower Show includes a Spitfire and Mustang flypast, but what were their contributions to WW2?
The Spitfire designed by R.J. Mitchell was our most effective fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Although in terms of numbers of aircraft in service and numbers of victories it was outshone by the Hurricane. Through a process of continual development the Spitfire was able to remain in frontline sevice throughout the war.

The Mustang (once united with a licence built version of the Merlin engine) was the first high performance fighter with a long enough range to be able to protect the American 8th Air Force bomber fleets on their daylight raids on Germany. The air cover provided by the Mustang, Thuderbolt and Lightning fighters helped keep the bomber losses on these raids to a sustainable level, thus allowing the German arms factories to be bombed frequently and acurately.

Therefore the Spitfire helped to prevent the Germans gaining the air superiority that they would need in order to consider invading Britain. Whilst the Mustang ensured the air superiority required in order to destroy the German war machine.
Reply:Flower parachute regiment. 5 squadron poppy tank group. And the famous 'daisy' administration support.

P-51D Mustang Aircraft

North American P-51D Mustang Aircraft

P-51D Mustang

The P-51 Mustang, originally designed by North American Aviation for the British RAF, proved itself in combat when it was reconfigured with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The upgraded configuration allowed for greater speed and a higher ceiling making it eligible for more combat roles.

In 1943, the P-51B entered combat over Europe escorting B-17 and B-24 bombers. The Mustang proved impressive in their combat role as an escort fighter, dominating German interceptors on many runs. Eventually the P-51 Mustang served in most combat theaters becoming a big factor in the dominance of the skies.

Through all of World War II and several years afterward, the Spitfire proved itself in combat as well as endearing itself to every man, woman and child who ever laid eyes on it. Not suprisingly, when the Spitfire was phased out of military service it became the prized possession for pilots around the globe. Air Marshals, test pilots, captains of industry, movie stars, and aircraft enthusiasts of all ages have fallen hopelessly under its spell for sixty-five years. More than any other aircraft in existence, the sight or sound of a Spitfire will stop any pilot in their tracks, their eyes thrust into the sky to see its shape, their ears yearning to feel the thunder of twelve cylinders at full song, their spirits transported back to the skies over Europe when the fate of the world hung in the balance.
Reply:The Spitfire was Britains main plane and its various versions were very successful in repelling the nazis in ww2..The mustang although it was developed later into ww2 played a significant part as a bomber escort plane for the americans..
Reply:The Spitfire and Mustang fighter airplanes were the U.K and U.S. single-man aircraft that succeeded in winning the air war known as the "Battle of Britain" in 1940.

Daily air duels of fighters vs. German bomber groups took place over most of the U.K. - if not for the superior speed and maneuverability of these aircraft, Germany would of achieved air superiority and possibly invaded England before the USA and allies could mount the D-Day invasion of France.
Reply:Was WW2 the theme for this year's show?

Did the flower show have something to do with 'Digging for

Britain' where everybody (not actively fighting the war) and, had access to a plot of land, cultivated fruit/vegetable crops during WW2?

Both aircraft made major contributions to winning WW2.

By the way - Where is Shrewsbury?
Reply:. . . together they formed the basis of a universal laxative to the German people, in that whenever they heard them coming they would sh*t themselves . . .
Reply:the spitfire kept the germans from blitzing our country totaly and mustangs did there bit for the yanks to.
Reply:The flower show or the fighters?
Reply:Well to put it very simply.. They were significant for europe..

The Spitfire along with the Hurricane, which in fact was more numerous, helped secure our Airspace and so stopped the Invasion.

The Mustang enabled the Bombers to range deep into Germany with fighter protection which they had been unable to do prior to its arrival in Europe ...

A very simple answer..

Should flower and vegetable gardens to only be watered in the morning or late afternoon?

Is this just a myth or can you water at any time of the day?
Should flower and vegetable gardens to only be watered in the morning or late afternoon?
you should water in the morning and late afternoon if the weather is really hot .otherwise morning is fine .dont water at the hottest part of the day as this will burn your roots and your plants . good luck .
Reply:During the summer watering in the early morning and evening is always a good idea. It guarantees that the plants/lawn get a more thorough watering because there will be less evaporation due to the cooler temps....
Reply:watering at night makes them more likely to get diseased. Water in the morning.
Reply:If it is really hot out then water your plants down to keep them cool. but watering your garden in the evening can invite mold and fungus to grow over night. plants like to be watered early in the morning, mainly just soaking the soil will do fine. If you water when there is dew on the ground then your plants will do great.
Reply:The reasoning behind not watering other times is this: during early afternoon the sun's rays are at their peak and you lose water to evaporation. Also the droplets on the leaves can act as a magnifier and burn the leaves if its getting direct sun at the time. Night watering supposedly makes plants more susceptible to fungal problems because dampness and darkness = fungus. Also this is said to encourage slugs and other night nibblers. That being said, I try to water in the morning but if I forget, I do water in the evening, just a little lighter. I also try to keep water off the leaves and just get the roots. I've never had any problems. I think its harder on the plants to be thirsty a whole additional day than to get an occasional evening sprinkle! I'm in Missouri in zone 6, your conditions might be different, of course.

Hope it helps!
Reply:Betty, the early morning is the best time. The late afternoon is the worst. In the morning the plants have a chance to take up the water so it's available to them in the hot afternoon sun. It takes a while for the plants to "drink", so the water applied in the afternoon is not available to the plants when they need it most. Be sure you are putting the water on the plants roots only, not watering over-head. Getting the plants leaves wet, especially in the afternoon, allows the water beads to act as a magnifying glass, burning the leaves. Don't water the plants in the evening, either, then the water creates opportunities for fungus to start.

Do you water with a hose? The easy way to do this is to turn the hose on so low it only drips, then put it under a plant for a hour or two, then move it. If you need to water daily, turn the hose on faster, and let it sit in one spot for shorter times. Another solution is to get the black hoses with Lazar holes in them that act as a drip system. Do you have a drip system already in place? This is the best way to water your plants. Set your timer for 5 minutes at 5 a.m., for 10 minutes at 6 a.m., and for 15 minutes at 7a.m. If you have more questions, you may email me through my profile.
Reply:Yes, only in the mornings and evenings. If you water during the middle of the day when it's usually the hottest and sunniest, quite a bit of the water will evaporate before actually hitting the plant and the water that actually gets into the ground will dry out fairly fast due to the sun and heat.

Never water after dark though because it's increases the chances of root rot.
Reply:Best if you water in the morning, like before 10. It gives them chance to absorb water before the noon/afternoon heat arrives.affiliate reviews

Hi there,

here's his website which shows the portrait. There is no "flower" that can be identified in the portrait. If you are referring to the vase in the background, it's WAYYYY too vague for anyone to define a flower in that.

Regarding Flower the Skunk in the Disney movie Bambi, does he come across as gay to anyone else?

Of course, I didn't notice it when I watched it as a child, but watching that movie now with my kids, it sure seems like he's a little on the effeminate side.
Regarding Flower the Skunk in the Disney movie Bambi, does he come across as gay to anyone else?
No, he's shy. There's a huge difference there.
Reply:why does it matter?
Reply:No, I think they were just showing how shy he was and how happy he was to have a friend, because he was a skunk after all - probably not a lot of critters wanted to get too close.

I can see how you would get that idea, but you have to remember the times this movie was made in. If you were to translate the characters into present times then Flower was gay, Thumper was a bully and the stag was a loser deadbeat dad - what kind of movie would that be for kids? I'm pretty sure that wasn't the intention with those characters.

Which flower means something special to you?

Roses . . .

All though I am allergic to them they carry special meaning to me because my grandmother loved them. She had rose bushes at every corner of her house. Several in other areas of her yard as well. She had a well formed arbor of roses she called Mr. Lincoln's across her walkway to the front door.

She even had this row of white rose bushes along her driveway that nearly broke my 10 yr old back to plant for her. We planted them to resemble a rose garden she saw in a magazine. Anyone else would have been disappointed when they started blooming pink one year because there were red roses nearby and the bees cross pollenated them. Not my grandmother she got excited every season to see what "shade" they'd be this year.

One of her favorite activities was to go out and prune them. She's also pluck off new buds early so she'd get a fuller crop of roses. She's get a beautiful glow from the sun each summer from tending to her flowers.

If she ever got pricked by the thorns on her rose bushes she'd smile and say "Kissed by a rose."

I sure do miss her!! Thanks for letting me share my memories of her.

Reply:Daisies and buttercups (actually, are these flowers or weeds?? Not sure!) Anyway,

Daisies cos it reminds me of making daisy chains when i was little, and buttercups cos that also reminds me of being a child, when you used to put it under someones chin to see if they like butter or not.

And dandelions (again a weed rather than a flower) cos i used to make wishes on them, blow on them and let them float up into the air when i was young.

Starting to think I have issues bout wanting to be a child again, what a thought provoking question!

Comments: This Australian native is used as an annual in

cold climates. It can be grown as a bedding annual or in

hanging pots. The blue flowers are fan-shaped. Grow the

plant in sun or light shade.

It's a beautiful flower especially in a hanging basket.
Reply:I think you mean scaevola, (common name fanflower). It's a cascading plant with blue (sometimes purple or white flowers) that looks great in pots or hanging baskets.

In the wild it's grown in sandy locations or beach environments and is a perennial in zone 10, but is grown as an annual in most of the United States. It's a great plant for hot, dry weather.

What flower is called Johnny-Jump-Ups ???
Johnny Jump Ups are a popular viola. They are called "old fashioned" favorites. These perennials are often grown as an annual, especially in northern parts of the country.

Johnny Jump Ups are native to Spain and the Pyrennes Mountains. Easy to grow, you may find them growing in the wild in fields, and along the road.

Small plants produce a wealth of dainty, fragrant blooms. Johnny Jump Up blooms are a combination of bright yellow and deep purple. They bloom early in the season.

Johnny Jump Up are popular, easy, and fun to grow. Fill an area or entire bed with Johnny Jump Up for a striking effect! They also are great in windowsills and containers.

What flower is best to put on a grave?
I know many people say carnations, but i think it's tacky. I would go with tulips. They're beautiful, and not as cliche as roses.
Reply:I usually choose one that the person liked. It shows how much I knew the person, it shows my connection to that person, it's symbolic of the good memories tied to that person, and I am remembering a part of their life in the form of their likes (and sometimes dislikes; ie - my grandma disliked roses but loved sunflowers).

To me, it's similar to bringing over a bouquet of flowers to give to someone as a gift. When you give a gift, you take the other person's likes and interests to heart.
Reply:Anything that has sentimental meaning for you...
Reply:The best flower is the one that means something to you. Cemeteries exist as a place for the living to remember those who have passed. Therefore, pick something that means something to you. Something that brings you happiness.

If you are planting, it is good to choose something that doesn't need daily maintenance and exists in the native climate. That is even more important where you may not be able to tend to the plantings for extended periods of time.

To maintain some order with respect to what shows up on graves and crypts, most burial parks have requirements about grave plantings and mausoleum decorations. Obviously, choose within these guidelines, which vary widely depending on the cemetery.
Reply:Carnations, Roses, Lilies, Poppies.
Reply:Pretty much anything that isn't plastic....and if others don't approve of your choice they aren't worth bothering with.

Any flower represent nurse?

I don't think there's a flower that "represents" nursing, but a

Geranium means "comfort", and a Peony means "healing."

Then I found this:

Lily of The Valley

A tribute to the Student Nurses was written by Paul Lawrence Dunbar after he was a patient at Miami Valley Hospital.

Sweetest of the flowers a-blooming

In the fragrant vernal days

Is the Lily of the Valley

With its soft retiring ways.

Well you chose this humble blossom

As the Nurse's emblem flower,

Who grows more like her ideal

Every day and every hour.

Like the Lily of The Valley

In her honesty and worth

Ah, she blooms in truth and virture

In the quiet nooks of earth.

Tho' she stands erect in honor

When the heart of mankind bleeds,

She still hides her own deserving

In the beauty of her deeds.

In the silence of the darkness

Where no eye may see or know,

There her footsteps shod with mercy,

And fleet kindness come and go.

Not amid the sounds of plaudits,

Nor before the garish days,

Does she shed her soul's sweet perfume,

Does she take her gentle way.

But alike her ideal flower

With its honey-laden breath

Still her heart blooms forth its beauty

In the valley shades of death.

This flower's name is from the Greek word for star?
Aster
Reply:aster
Reply:Aster (syn. Diplopappus Cass.) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. The genus once contained nearly 600 species in Eurasia and North America, but after morphologic and molecular research on the genus during the 1990's, it was decided that the North American species are better treated in a series of other genera. After this split there are roughly 180 species within the genus, all but one being confined to Eurasia. The name Aster comes from the Ancient Greek word astron, meaning "star", arriving through the Latin word astrum with the same meaning, referring to the shape of the flower head. Many species and a variety of hybrids and varieties are popular as garden plants because of their attractive and colourful flowers. Aster species are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera which feed on Aster. Asters can grow in all hardiness zones.

Evolutionists: Flower or bee, where is the evidence or can you admit it is all speculation?

I read the great sorce on coevolution that was suggested. In it it said,"The HYPOTHETICAL coevolution of pollination and angiosperms.." It listed many great species DESIGNED specifically for each other too.
Evolutionists: Flower or bee, where is the evidence or can you admit it is all speculation?
Early gymnosperms and angiosperms were wind-pollinated.

Like modern gymnosperms, the ovule exuded droplets of sap to catch pollen grains.

Insects (beetles) on the plant found this protein/sugar mix and used it as food.

Insects became dependent on this food source and started carrying pollen from plant to plant.

Beetle-pollination must have been more efficient than wind for some species, so there was natural selection for plants that attracted insects.

Next to occur would have been the evolution of nectaries, nectar-secreting structures, to lure the pollinators.

Development of white or brightly-colored, conspicuous flowers to draw attention to the nectar and/or other food sources would also have occurred.

The carpel (female reproductive structure) was originally leaf-shaped. It became folded on itself to enclose and protect the ovule from being eaten by the pollinators (hence Angiosperms). Plants with protected ovules would have been selected over ones with ovules that got eaten.

By the beginning of the Cenozoic Era (65 mya), the first bees, wasps, butterflies, and moths had evolved. The significance in this is that these are insects for which flowers are often the only source of nutrition for the adults.

From this point on, certain plant and insect species have had a profound influence on one another’s evolution. A flower that attracted specific pollinators on a regular basis had an advantage (less wasted pollen) over flowers that attracted “promiscuous” pollinators. It is also an advantage for the pollinator to have its own “private” food source because there is, thus, less competition. The varied shapes, colors, and odors of flowers allowed sensory recognition by pollinators and excluded unwanted, indiscriminate pollinators.

Today, over 65% of Angiosperms are insect-pollinated and 20% of insects, at least at some stage, depend on flowers for their food.

Check out the excellent link for more info.
Reply:The co-evolution of pollination and angiosperms is a theory based on evolution. All the science suggests it is true. Some forms of co-evolution have even been observed and studied.

Within evolution, there are many theories as to why specific types of species became the way they are. All these theories are based on scientific study, data, experimentation, etc. None of this science suggests in any way that there was something "designing" species.
Reply:Evolution is fact. The theory regards the mechanisms behind the fact.

Creationism is not a theory, it's not even science. It has no evidence.

You should also be aware, that if evolutionary theory were ever overturned, it would be done so via a scientifi theory that better explains the evidence (rather unlikely).

Pointing out well-known gaps in evolutionary chains in no way demonstrates "God did it".
Reply:You've become trapped by words, but I suppose that's understandable for a literalist. What has captured you is known as teleology and I'll let you read about that on your own:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleology

Your other point - hypothetical and speculation - is entirely true. The theory of evolution moves incrementally from speculation and hypothesis to concrete knowledge. It's not a complete theory but it is a well-established theory. No evolutionary biologist will admit we know it all - science is always a work in progress - but since Darwin's day, evolution has had more than a century of support from every aspect of science. To effectively argue evolution (for or against) you're going to need more than a "great source on coevolution," I'd suggest an advanced degree in one of the life sciences.
Reply:Huh?

Evolution isn't just speculation. There are predictions. Those predictions are tested, and found to be true.

Sorry, but we all know that design is just Creationism dressed up. And we all know that modern Creationist are felons, like Kent Hovind.

So if you want to go on your soapbox and say "Yes, I proudly embrace the same sense of honesty that tax frauds like Kent Hovind do", then go ahead. It'll make life easier for everyone else to know which side is honest, and which side is criminal.
Reply:There is lots of evidence of evolution, and the fact of the matter is that while it's referred to as a theory, the difference is that there is NO evidence of intelligent design. Which theory would you have us lean towards, then: a theory with solid evidence to back it up, or a notion that some magical being created us all and which has no evidence supporting it?
Reply:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
Reply:It is a hypothesis based on a theory.

More scientific than Creationism, which is speculation.flower

Passion flower?

does anyone have any tips for growing it?
Passion flower?
The Beautiful Passion Flower

Advantages easy to grow, beautful flowers and leaves

Disadvantages slugs and snails like to munch on them !

I have had my own house for about 2 years now and have only a very small garden with limited space for growing plants. I was bought the Passion Flower by my parents who assured me it was very easy to grow, as I don't have a very good track record with keeping plants alive. This is mainly because I refuse to use slug and snail pellets etc as I think it's cruel.

Anyway, back on topic, here I will be reviewing the beautiful Passion Flower.

The Passion Flower

As I already said, the Passion Flower is very easy to grow, both in conservatories as well as in the garden. This plant originates from the tropical rain forest regions of South America. The ripe Passion Flower has a very distinctive aroma not found in any other flower. The Passion Flower is a climbing plant and the vines which climb are also very pretty with lovely shaped leaves (the leaves are a similar shape to cannabis leaves). The leaves are a dark green color and once the plant has begun to climb, the leaves are very close together and make up the majority of the plant. The Passion Flower itself is very beautiful, it's purple, yellow and white in color and can measure 2-3 inches across. Flowers bloom from June to August and for the rest of the year you are left with the leaves which can die and fall off during the winter months, leaving you with just the vines but these all grow back come spring.

Uses

The Passion Flower is actually more than just a beautiful flower. The Passion Flower is edible, the fruits and flowers can be eaten raw or cooked in jams and jellies and young leaves can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable or in salads.

The Passion Flower also had medicinal properties. It has been reported that it can help with the following problems:

Anxiety

Passion flower has a tranquilizing effect, including mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects. In studies conducted since the 1930's, it has been found to be different than that of most sedative drugs (sleeping pills), thus making it a non-addictive herb to promote relaxation.

Insomnia:

The sedative effect of Passion flower has also made it popular for treating a variety of ailments, including nervousness and insomnia. Research had indicated that passion flower has a complex activity on the body's central nervous system, which is responsible for its overall tranquilizing effects. Also, it apparently has an excellent effect on smooth muscles within the body, including the digestive system which helped promote good digestion.

How To Grow The Passion Flower

Passion Flowers are easy to grow but can sometimes be difficult to keep alive during the winter months because their roots can rot if they are consistently cold and wet - although I have never had a problem with this. In the wild, the Passion Flower would grow where the ground is very well drained therefore you should try to plant your Passion Flower in a well drained area of soil.

I was bought a young passion flower rather than attempting to grow it from seeds. I planted it in a well drained area, and checked it regularly to see if the snails and slugs had been munching on it. I protected the plant while it was small and covered it with a 2 liter lemonade bottle until the plant began to mature and begin to climb.

Looking After The Passion Flower

I find that the Passion Flower takes very little looking after. Obviously during the summer, when the soil is dry, it will need watering. The Passion Flower thrives on lots of water (which is very convenient considering the British weather!). The leaves of this plant are fairly large and can loose large amounts of water whilst the plant is growing so you will need to ensure that during the hottest summer months you water it regularly, preferable on a daily basis but to be honest, during the summer months, I did forget to water it a few times and it didn't die on me! During the winter you will probably have to water it as little as once a week, probably less depending on how much rainfall we have.

If you wish for your Passion Flower to grow very quickly (for example, to fill a particular space) then you can always feed it any of the plant feed on the market and it will take this quite greedily and will make the plant grow very quickly.

As already mentioned, the Passion Flower is a climbing plant. The only other maintenance that I can think of it that you may need to adjust the vines as it grows. For example, I have my Passion Flower growing along the fence and quite often new shoots decide they want to try and grow over my neighbor's fence so I have to untangle them and place them in a place that I want them to grow. I find new shoots on my plant quite often and found that it was very easy to get this plant to fill the space I wanted it to.

The vines have 'feelers' growing from them and this has got to be my favorite part of the plant. The 'feelers' grab hold of anything they can and held to support the plant as it grows. The 'feelers' sort of curl themselves over and over again and if they don't find anything to grab hold of, then they just curl round themselves. I love this part of the plant as I think it adds real character.

Pruning

Once your plant has reached the size you want it to, you will need to keep it pruned to ensure that it does not take over your garden (and other peoples) as it will do if it is just left. You should prune your plant in spring time when the growth of the plant starts again. You should remove older shoots and any dead sections of the plant and trim back any that have grown further than you wanted them to.

Summary: An easy to grow, beautiful plant
Reply:They like to be planted in the sun, make sure that you water them every day, and you can even plant them in the ground and then repot them in the fall.
Reply:Grow it where it can have full support for its massive vines, such as a trellis or arbor, feed it on occasion. protect from damaging winds and make sure its in a sunny location and don't allow its soil to dry out. If growing it in a pot, make sure its no less than 18" in diameter.
Reply:one of my favorite plants! It is hardy in my climate so we have many different kinds. I grew them when i lived in Virginia under florecents in the winter. The only problem i ever had was spider mites. Neem will take care of that just be sure to spray after lights out or they will burn. Passiflora incarnata is a varietey that is hardy to zone 6. if planted in a protected area it can survive intense frosts.genealogy mormon
